Dear Parents/Carers,

Christmas Baazar

It was lovely to see so many of you at the Baazar last Saturday.  The Baazar raised just over £2,000 for the Parish and the Community.  Thank you.

Christmas Jumper Day

Christmas Jumper Day will be celebrated on Friday 21st December.  Children can wear their Christmas jumper along with their normal school uniform.

Parking

Please DO NOT park on the zigzag lines as this causes danger to the children when crossing the road.

These lines (including the loading bay) are enforceable. This means that Bristol City Council are using mobile cameras to photograph vehicles that are parked illegally and will be issuing fines. We have been asked to contact the enforcement department with details of vehicles parked (or stopping) illegally.

A Paediatric first aid course is being held at Filwood Community Centre.  Please contact Lucy on 07788353446.

This means Year 2 will have a special non-uniform day on a later date which will be decided by Mrs Triggs.

Dealing with Problems

If parents have any problems regarding their child, they are always advised to see the class teacher. Alternatively you can always speak to Mrs Selway or myself on the front gate, or speak to the team in the office who will find the right person to help.

Recently we have had problems being shared on Facebook that have not been shared with the school. If we are told what you are worried about, we will always do our best to address your concerns.

Christmas lunch

The children’s Christmas dinner day is the 19th December.  Children will be booked in for a Christmas lunch unless you let the school office know.  The school cook needs to have the number of Christmas dinners to prepare before the day. The cost will be £2.10 for Junior Children.

Dear Parents/Carers,

The Best Week of Attendance Ever!

Well done to the following classes who had attendance at over 97% this week:
Year 1 - 98%
Year 2 - 99%
Year 3 - 99%
Year 4 - 99%
Year 5 - 99%
Year 6 - 98%

This means Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 will have a special non-uniform day on Friday 7th December.

Friday Morning Coffee Time

Mrs Selway is now hosting informal drop-in sessions each Friday morning. This time will enable parents/carers to meet up and perhaps seek support and advice. Mrs Selway can offer advice and also provide links to other organisations who offer support. If you have a worry of any kind, or just would like to have a chat with other parents and carers  - pop in!

School Places for September

In July, Ofsted Inspector Michael Merchant praised our school saying, ‘The School of Christ The King is a welcoming, caring school… where there is a very positive atmosphere in classrooms and teachers have high expectations of pupils’.

The school is almost full but we do have some space available in Years 5 and 6. If you know somebody who might need a school place, please ask them to contact the school office.

Parents can now apply for places for Reception 2019 via www.bristol.gov.uk/schooladmissions.  All applications need to be made by the 15th January 2019.  A supplementary form also needs to be completed and returned to the school office.

IF YOU KNOW SOMEBODY WHO NEEDS A SCHOOL PLACE, PLEASE LET THEM KNOW ABOUT SCHOOL OF CHRIST THE KING! Thank you.

Punctuality

A reminder that children need to be in school by 8.50am.  On a morning if your child does not arrive by 8.55am the front gates will be closed and your child will need to be brought to the main school office on arrival. We will always request a reason for lateness when a child is more than 5 minutes late.

We also have a number of children who are regularly collected late from school. Whilst we understand that parents and carers may be occasionally late collecting their child, it is unacceptable when this is a regular occurance. When this is happening often we will contact parents explaining that, if late collection continues, we will have to restrict access to extended school activities such as clubs and Chill Time Club.

If you are late, due to unforeseen circumstances, please let the school office know.

Christmas Lunch

The children’s Christmas dinner day is the 19th December.  Children will be booked in for a Christmas lunch unless you let the school office know.  The school cook needs to have the number of Christmas dinners to prepare before the day. The cost will be £2.10 for Junior Children.

Summer Chill Time Klub

Summer Chill Time Klub will run again during the summer holiday next year.  The Klub will be open on w/c 29th July and 5th August.   If you would like to book your child into the Klub please telephone the school office.

Leave of Absence During Term Time

We must remind all parents that the Headteacher CANNOT authorise any leave of absence during term time unless for exceptional circumstances.  Any requests must be made in writing on a form available from the school office and must be made at least ten days before leave is due to commence.  Any leave taken that has not been considered exceptional will be recorded as unauthorised.  There will be two unauthorised absences recorded for each day - morning and afternoon.  If there are eight or more unauthorised absences recorded within a ten week period, the school can issue a penalty notice.  This will be £60 per child for each parent, meaning a possible penalty charge of £120 per child.

We appreciate that holidays taken during term time can be much cheaper than those taken during the school holidays but we have a legal responsibility to ensure that every child is attending school and receiving their education.

Year 6 SATs Week

Year 6 SATs tests will take place from Monday 13th May - Friday 17th May 2019.  These are statutory tests and parents/carers should avoid any family holidays during the month of May.

All children in the infants MUST be collected by an adult known to the school.
If your child is in the Juniors please inform the school office if they are allowed walk to or from school alone.

It is recommended by the government for the safeguarding of children that they do not walk home alone from school until they are 10 years old.

Following this guidance the school strongly recommends only children in Year 5 & 6 walk to or from school alone. Younger children are at risk even if they are walking short distances alone.

A list will be given to school staff indicating if your child can walk alone, should you decide to change these arrangements it is your responsibility to inform the school office.

There is a lot of lost property in school. Please come and take a look on Friday morning if your child has lost anything during this term.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Ofsted Report

As you all know, Ofsted Inspector Michael Merchant visited the school just before the summer holiday.

I am proud to send home the new report which judges that the school continues to be good.

The inspector was really impressed with how parents, school staff, the parish and the wider community work together to give our children the best.

We hope you will all read the full report, which is being sent home today, but here are some of the highlights which reflect the achievements of this school community:

  • ‘The School of Christ The King is a welcoming, caring school’.
  • ‘There is a very positive atmosphere in classrooms and teachers have high expectations of pupils’.
  • ‘Parents speak highly of the school, with one parent echoing the views of many when saying: ‘I couldn’t wish for a better school for my children. All of them love coming to school here, all [are] doing brilliantly academically and should any worries or concerns arise they are always dealt with amazingly well.’’
  • ‘All pupils, but especially those who are vulnerable or at risk, are kept safe and out of harm as a result of strong pastoral and multi-agency work. The deployment of key personnel, especially the very effective learning mentor, provides effective support to pupils’.
  • ‘Despite the strong gains of recent years, the school show no signs of complacency’. ‘The school is set on an ambitious path of improvement’.
  • ‘The school reaches out to your local community in a very real way’.
  • ‘Staff make every effort to ensure that any obstacles to learning that are placed in the way of its pupils are overcome’.
  • ‘Governors are highly ambitious for the school’.

We are especially pleased that Ofsted recognised that our next steps were areas we are already working on:

  • Continue to work with families to improve pupils’ attendance
  • Consolidate the improvements to the teaching of reading and writing so that a greater proportion of pupils reach the higher standards.

Can I especially thank all parents and carers who gave feedback via Parent View, free-text responses and the parents who met with the inspector at the end of the school day.

I would like to congratulate all children, staff, governors and parents as we continue on our journey of school improvement. Let’s look forward to an outstanding report next time!

The report will be published on the Ofsted website on Monday.

We thank you all for your support.
