Her Majesty The Queen

Buckingham Palace has announced the sad death of Her Majesty The Queen. The Chaplaincy Team led today’s assembly, as we remembered the life of our longest reigning monarch.  Our prayers, thoughts and condolences are with the Royal Family during this difficult time. May she rest in peace.

Your child can then attend Chill until 4:30pm. To book clubs, please download the School Gateway App. Contact the school, if you have any questions.

Trainers or daps.

We are continuing to ask children to come to school in their PE kit, on their allocated day.

School Uniform

The children are looking super smart, as the new school year begins. A reminder of school uniform is:

Red school jumper, cardigan or fleece

Plain black/dark grey school trousers, shirt or shorts

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to the last newsletter of this school year. The children have had another great year with lots of learning, achievement, fun and laughter. Can I thank you all for your hard work, friendship and support.

Success in 2021-22

Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception Outcomes):

This year’s Reception class had a really good year, with the number of children working at expected or above (Good Level of Development) having increased over previous years.

Year 1 Phonics

A very impressive 81% reached the expected level this year, which is in line with national results and means our children are ready to be even better readers in Year 2.

Year 2 Outcomes:

This group of children, who missed so much time in school in Reception and Year 2, made great progress in Year 2, leading to results we are very proud of. They did especially well in their writing.

Year 4 Tables Check:

This group did incredibly well on this new national test with 61% scoring 20/25 in this test. Many children scored almost full marks in this test.

Year 6 Outcomes:

We are incredibly proud of our children who achieved results in line with national standards in writing and reading and exceeded national results in maths and grammar and punctuation. We are especially proud that a fantastic 35% of our children achieved Greater Depth in reading - showing a big improvement on previous years.

Overall

Children in all year groups have done incredibly well and we are all very proud of their achievements.

Top Attenders 2021-22

Well done to these children who have achieved at least 99% attendance for the entire year: Taylor yr6, Justin yr6, Chris yr6, Fidel yr5, Merit yr5, Cheyenne  yr5, Grace yr4, Abby yr3, Victor yr3, Lindsay yr3, Fritzie yr3, Ivan yr3, Ollie yr3 and Michelle yr1 - these children have received a £10 voucher.

And an even bigger well done to these two children who achieved 100% attendance: Manna yr2 and Daniella in Reception - these children have received a £10 voucher and a special 100% attendance badge.

Goodbye and Thank You

Sadly we will soon be saying goodbye to two valued members of the CTK team.

Mrs Wareham has done a great job teaching Reception and will be moving onto a new Nursery Teacher position in Clevedon.  Mrs Meacham has amazingly served this school and community for the last 18 years. She has done a wonderful job as a teacher; especially supporting children with additional needs.

Children and staff will miss both greatly and we wish them all the best in the future.

Summer Reading Challenge

Last week the children had a special assembly from Bristol Libraries about the Summer Reading Challenge. This year's theme is ‘Gadgeteers’ and children who take part have the chance to win some great prizes through the local library. For more information on how to take part, visit Filwood Library or www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk

Dear Parents and Carers

End of school year

Please remember that next week is our final week of term . The last day of term for Pupils will be Thursday 21st July.

Sports Day

Unfortunately due to the expected high temperatures next week, we have made the decision to cancel sports day.

Hot Weather

As you are aware, we are expecting some very hot weather at the beginning of next week. School will be open as normal, and we are following guidance from the Department of Education to ensure that school is a safe environment for our children.

The key advice being given is:

  • Keep hydrated - please ensure children are coming into school with a filled water bottle. Pupils will have access to water to refill their bottles throughout the day.
  • Stay cool indoors - We will amend our break times to ensure that children are having adequate fresh air breaks, but are not outside for prolonged periods of time.
  • Dress appropriately - We have plenty of hats available in school, and children are welcome to bring their own too. Children will be welcome to wear weather appropriate clothing (although please make sure that these are still school appropriate) and please make sure they are wearing sun cream.

If there are any changes to this guidance, we will inform you as soon as we are aware.

Welcome to Nursery and Reception 2022 Booklets

These are now both available on the school website under the ‘Nursery’ and ‘Reception’ tabs.

Year 6 Assembly

The Year 6 Leavers Assembly will now be held on Thursday 21st July, due to the weather warning. Please can Year 6 parents/carers be seated in the school hall by 1:55pm.

Lost Property

Our lost property table will be out by the main entrance for parents to look through at the end of next week.

Top Attenders

As the end of the school year draws closer - we look forward to sharing our Top Attenders for the year. These will be the children who have achieved at least 99% attendance for the entire year. We will be presenting awards next week!

Summer Reading Challenge

Last week the children had a special assembly from Bristol Libraries about the Summer Reading Challenge. Special mention - Y4, 5 and 6 girls in the football team.

Well done to all the girls who represented CTK at a football tournament on Wednesday. They did brilliantly and scored with two teams ending up third in their groups. Everyone who participated showed great skill and good sportswomanship by being gracious winners and losers as they were the first to shake their opponent’s hands. Lots of goals were scored, fun was had and extra special mention goes to Missey who won a Bristol City football shirt for her skill! Well done all!

Dear Parents and Carers

Sports Day

Sports Day - Monday 18th July, Filwood Fields

The current plan is for Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 classes to start first thing in the morning with Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 to follow later in the morning.

We will give exact timings nearer the time so adults can come and support their children. All children are to arrive at school at the normal time and will be collected from school at normal time.

The children will wear their PE kit (black/blue shorts and white t-shirt) and trainers or daps to school. All children will need a water bottle.

If the weather is either very hot or it is raining there may be changes to the arrangements and these will be sent by text during the morning.

Mini Market

Well done to our Year 6 class, who ran an amazing Mini Market today, raising over an amazing £650. The children planned some great, fun, fundraising activities , which were enjoyed by the whole school.

Also a big well done to all children - for their amazing behaviour, and to parents for your support.

Top Attenders

As the end of the school year draws closer - we look forward to sharing our Top Attenders for the year. These will be the children who have achieved at least 99% attendance for the entire year. We will be looking forward to sharing some special rewards with these children, so keep your eyes peeled for further news!

End of school year

With only 2 weeks left of Term, we are quickly approaching the end of the school year. The last day of term for Pupils will be Thursday 21st July.

Cancelling After School Clubs

Our after school clubs at Christ the King have become increasingly popular in the past few weeks, and we often have to operate a waiting list of children that would like to attend each day. We understand that sometimes children do not attend booked sessions due to illness/change of plans, however we’ve recently had a number of children being collected after school when they are due to stay, without informing us. This means they have taken a space at the after school club that could have been given to another child.

If you have booked a session and your child can no longer stay/no longer wants to stay for any reason, please inform the school office before 11.00am so that we can offer the space out to another child.

If you do not cancel your session, and your child goes home (for reasons excluding illness), you may still be charged.

Headteachers Awards

The following children will receive an award in next week’s Celebration Assembly. Videos of Celebration Assemblies are now shared on our Facebook page.

Dear Parents and Carers

First Holy Communion

Can the governors, staff and pupils of School of Christ the King wish congratulations to all the children who received their First Holy Communion last Sunday.

Vacancy for School Cleaner

We have a vacancy for a school cleaner starting in July. If you would be interested in the position please contact the school office for an application form.  Hours for the vacancy are Monday to Friday 3.30pm to 5.30pm with some work required during the school holidays.

Staffing news and class organisation 2021-22

As we prepare for the summer holiday, here is the class teacher structure from September:

  • Nursery - Miss Griffiths
  • Reception - Miss Letherby
  • Year 1 - Mrs Rowland
  • Year 2 - Mr Purser (Deputy Headteacher)
  • Year 3 - Miss Garrett
  • Year 4 - Mr Prichard
  • Year 5 - Mrs Rotheram
  • Year 6 - Miss Owers
  • Teachers in various classes - Mrs Peppin and Mrs Buckland
  • Academic Mentor - Mrs Fannin
  • Reading Teacher - Miss Wakeford
  • Assistant Headteacher and Inclusion Lead - Mrs Jordan

This does mean that we will be sadly be saying goodbye to Mrs Wareham Mrs Meacham, who are both going on to new teaching roles.

Coming in on a morning

We recently asked that parents with Nursery children use the front area of the school to wait with their children until Nursery opens at 9am. This was to ensure the safety of families, and so that the pavement outside of school was not being blocked. Whilst children are now utilising the front space, parents are still waiting on the pavement outside. This means that not only are children in this area unsupervised, but that the pavement is still being blocked for other pedestrians.

Please can we ask that parents wait with their children inside the school gates and that they supervise their children until Nursery opens at 9.00am.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation with this matter.

Attendance 27/06 - 30/06

Congratulations to both year 5 classes who have had great attendance this week:

  • Year 5O - 98%
  • Year 5R - 99%

This means that Year 5R will have a special non-uniform day soon!

Top Attenders

End of school year

With only 3 weeks left of Term, we are quickly approaching the end of the school year. The last day of term for Pupils will be Thursday 21st July.

Dropping Children Off to School and Parking

Please can we politely ask that parents do not stop in the middle of the road and allow their children to get out of the car in front of school. Not only is this extremely dangerous, it causes a backlog of traffic in front of the school site. There is plenty of parking available to parents on Filwood Broadway, and we encourage parents to use these spaces and walk their children into school, with the support of the crossing patrol directly outside the school.

Please also be reminded that parents should not be parking on the zig-zag lines or in the loading bay. A visitor using a wheelchair was blocked-in last week by parents using this space when collecting children - this meant that both the child and wheelchair user were left to stand in the rain until the owners of the vehicle returned. Please be thoughtful of others when you park.

We thank you for your ongoing support with this matter.

Late Collection of Children

Occasionally, there are unforeseen circumstances that mean you may be late to collect your child from school, however in recent weeks, we have had a number of children being collected late on a regular basis.

When children are collected late, staff have to come away from their regular duties to supervise them, meaning unplanned staffing costs for the school. With this in mind, from Term 6 onwards we will be implementing a charging system for those children who are regularly collected late. These charges will be as follows:

  • After 3.20 - £2.50 charge
  • After 4.00pm - £5.00 charge

In the first instance, parents will be given a written warning regarding late collection of children, however should this become a regular occurrence, these charges will apply.

Cancelling After School Clubs

Our after school clubs at Christ the King have become increasingly popular in the past few weeks, and we often have to operate a waiting list of children that would like to attend each day. Dear Parents

This term children in Reception to Year 6 will be learning about relationships part of the RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) curriculum. Following the full consultation with parents last year, we would just like to remind you of the Parent Portal part of the programme.

The Life to the Full programme is based on the structure of ‘A Model Catholic RSE Curriculum’ by the Catholic Education Service. This model curriculum was highlighted as a work of good practice by the Department of Education so we therefore have confidence that the programme will be fit for purpose in supporting the growth and development of your child.

Life to the Full is much more than a series of lessons. It is an entire platform of creative resources that will engage, inform and inspire our children and, indeed, you as parents. This includes interactive video content, story-based activities, employing a wide range of teaching tools, original worship music and an accompanying programme of classroom prayers.

To access the online parent platform please visit: www.tentenresources.co.uk/parent-portal

  • Username: school-ctk-bs4
  • Password: canal-banks

Life to the Full is intended to be a partnership between home, school and church. We know that you already do a fantastic job and we see our new programme, Life to the Full, as a means to further develop, support and enrich the partnership between home, school and church so that your child is fully supported.

If you have any queries, please email these to the school office on Christ.the.king.p@bristol-schools.uk

Kind regards

Miss Griffiths

Top Attenders

As the end of the school year draws closer - we look forward to sharing our Top Attenders for the year. These will be the children who have achieved at least 99% attendance for the entire year. We will be looking forward to sharing some special rewards with these children, so keep your eyes peeled for further news!

Weekly Attendance

Congratulations to Year 3 who have achieved 98% attendance this week! This is a great achievement - keep up the good work!

With only one week left of the school term, we hope to see more classes achieve this next week, and going into next term. Don’t forget, classes that achieve at least 99% attendance will be rewarded with a non-uniform day!

Leave of Absence During Term Time

We must remind all parents that the Headteacher CANNOT authorise any leave of absence during term time unless for exceptional circumstances.  Any requests must be made in writing on a form available from the school office and must be made at least ten days before the leave is due to commence.  Any leave taken that has not been considered exceptional will be recorded as unauthorised.  There will be two unauthorised absences recorded for each day - morning and afternoon.  If there are eight or more unauthorised absences recorded within a ten week period, the school can issue a penalty notice.  This will be £60 per child for each parent, meaning a possible penalty charge of £120 per child (which could double after a period of time).

We appreciate that holidays taken during term time can be much cheaper than those taken during the school holidays but we have a legal responsibility to ensure that every child is attending school and receiving their education.

Attendance

Congratulations to Year 3 who have achieved 98% attendance this week! This is a great achievement - keep up the good work!

With only one week left of the school term, we hope to see more classes achieve this next week, and going into next term. Don’t forget, classes that achieve at least 99% attendance will be rewarded with a non-uniform day!

Dear Parents and Carers

A reminder that we are closed this Monday (23rd May) for and INSET Day.

PE Kit

We have recently had lots of children coming into school in the wrong PE Kit (named brand sports wear, brightly coloured clothing etc). We welcome children to wear their kit in on their classes PE day, however this only applies if they have the correct kit - white t-shirt & black shorts - if they do not have this correct kit, they should come to school wearing their uniform and bring their sportswear to change into before their PE lesson.

If children arrive wearing the incorrect kit, we will be contacting parents to arrange for uniforms to be bought in.

Headteachers Awards

The following children will receive an award in next week’s Celebration Assembly. Videos of Celebration Assemblies are now shared on our Facebook page.

Reception -

  • Daniella for doing some fantastic writing in literacy. Daniella wrote a sentence about the little red hen story and used her sounds to write independently. Well done Daniella!

Nursery Drop Off

One of our highest priorities here at Christ the King is the safety of our children and their families. With this in mind, we would like to ask that families waiting for nursery to open in the morning now wait inside the school gates. This ensures that not only are children kept safely away from the road, but also that the pathways are kept clear for pedestrians.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation with this matter.

Head Lice

We have had reports of head lice from a number of classes across the school. We would like to ask that parents are regularly checking their children’s hair for nits, and treating them when necessary. Whilst head lice are not an excuse to miss school, they can be irritating for children which in turn can become a distraction from learning, so we ask parents to remain vigilant and deal with them as soon as possible.

Medical Appointments during the school day

Please can we remind parents that without medical evidence (an appointment card/letter/prescription), appointments during the school day will not be authorised. Multiple unauthorised absences may result in a penalty notice (fine) being issued. Where possible, please book appointments after school hours or during school holidays.

Jewellery

A polite reminder that children should not be wearing excessive jewellery to school. Pupils are only permitted to wear stud earrings into school, they should not be wearing hoops or drop earrings. Children should also not be wearing necklaces, bracelets or rings into school, and we cannot take responsibility for the loss or damage of such items.

CTK Nursery Class - Places Available

We are extremely proud of our new(ish) nursery class which is open for 3 and 4 year olds. Our Early Years Team have worked really hard to make it a welcoming and enjoyable place for children to play and learn, developing the skills they need ready for primary school. You can take a look at the fantastic work that’s been going on through the Nursery page on our school website.

If you are interested in applying for a place for your child or think you may know someone who is interested, please ask them to contact the school office to express interest.
