Dear Parents/Carers,
Attendance - Well Done

As you know we have been pushing for improved attendance, especially since the start of January. September- December attendance was a very disappointing 94%.

However, I am very pleased to say that in January attendance has improved to 96%. I would like to thank you all for this big improvement.
Well done to the following classes for achieving 97% or more attendance this week:

  • Reception with 97% attendance
  • Year 2 with 98% attendance
  • Year 3 with 98% attendance
  • Year 4 with 98% attendance

Cricket at School of Christ the King by Wicketz Bristol coach Crispin Shingler

Cricket came to School of Christ the King on Tuesday and Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 knocked it for six!

“Are we doing football?” was the question of the day from the majority of the children.
“No” I replied with hesitation, as football seems to be the children’s sport of choice.  “We’re doing cricket.”  This was greeted either with a confused expression or the follow up question “What’s that?”
“You’ll see”.

Having been given a warm welcome by both staff and children, I prepared my cricket equipment; stumps, bats and balls, which generated curious glances from the children as they walked into the hall for their session.  Each year group got stuck into a warm up game designed to help them understand fielding terminology, and even in the warm up, the children were driven to do well with some displaying a captain’s mentality.  Following on from this, each class did some catching drills using a cone as a catching aid.  As a coach, I was really impressed how the children evaluated their techniques and were always thinking of ways to improve.  The children worked very well in pairs, some giving each other praise and positive re-enforcement.  It is brilliant to see the Spirit of Cricket and good sportsmanship.

Then came the moment I was waiting for; the game.  Each year group was split into three teams; one batting, one fielding and the other watching and supporting, waiting to play the victor.  The game played was a variation of regular cricket designed to be fast paced and involve all participants.  Once the children understood the laws of this adapted game, they really took to it.  Some children, both boys and girls, demonstrated a natural ability with the bat, others were holding some fantastic catches and there were a few who were really thinking where to place the ball when at the crease.  The team from the side lines were supporting players on the field of play with cheers of “ooos” and “ahhhs”.  Year 6 were the final group of the day and ended it on a wonderful high with each member shaking each other’s hand after a game well played.

I had a wonderful time being at School of Christ the King offering a whole day of cricket.  All the children demonstrated a keen want to play and I hope they are able to come to the Wicketz Bristol hub at The Park, Daventry Road, Bristol, BS4 1DQ every Tuesday from 14th February, 4.30pm – 6.00pm.  There is no cost, it absolutely free.  All you need to do is turn up in some comfortable clothes, trainers, fill in a registration from and have fun.
