Dear Parents/Carers,

Start of the New School Year

Following the recent government announcement, we are planning to open to all children in September. There will be more information shared once we have more details from the government, but can I confirm that we will be having a staff training day (INSET) on Tuesday 1st September, so the school will open to children on Wednesday 2nd September.

Supportive Parents Virtual Hub is now live

This Virtual Information Hub is aimed at children and young people and their families. It brings together information from local partner organisations about services, activities and opportunities available to children and young people while COVID-19 restrictions are in place. Information is available in video format for each organisation together with a link to their website. Follow this link to browse:

IMPORTANT REMINDER - Update on Children Returning

As stated in a previous newsletter, we are planning to open in the last week of term (week beginning Monday 13th July and finish on Friday 17th July) to children in Years 2, 3 4 and 5.  We hope that this plan will give all children the opportunity to finish their school year together, feeling happier and looking forward to a summer holiday and the new school year.

We are planning for all children to be taught in smaller ‘bubbles’ like children in school presently. This means that classes will be split into smaller groups and they may not be taught by their class teacher. There will be no Breakfast Club or Chill Time Klub during this week.

As this requires planning to ensure we have sufficient staff and space, we are asking all parents and carers to let us know if they would like their child to attend or not. We can then let everybody know what days children can come into school during this week.

There will be no consequences, if parents and carers choose to keep their children at home until September

It would be extremely helpful if you could let us know by Wednesday 1st July at the latest, preferably by email - christ.the.king.p@bristol-schools.uk, if you wish your child to attend during the week beginning or not. WITHOUT CONFIRMATION BY THIS DATE, WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THAT A PLACE WILL BE AVAILABLE.

Dear Parents and Carers

Free School Meals [FSM] during the summer holidays

As you may have seen in the news the Government has decided to extend the voucher scheme for those young people eligible for FSM during the summer holiday. If you are currently accessing FSM, you will continue to receive your vouchers through Edenred UK, the Government FSM scheme, until the end of the summer holidays.

During these difficult times, your family circumstances may have changed, and you may now be eligible for FSM. Please find below more information about how you can apply to receive Free School Meals.

Who is eligible?

If you or your child is receiving any of the following benefits, they may be eligible for free school meals:
  • Income support
  • Income based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income related Employment Support Allowance
  • Guaranteed Element of State Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (but not Working Tax Credit) and have an annual income of less than £16,190
  • Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit (your household income must be less than £7,400 a year after tax and not including any benefits you receive)

My child may be eligible – how do I claim?

If you think that your child is eligible, it is important to apply as soon as possible so that you can start to receive the vouchers.  Access the Local Authority’s free school meal website page https://www.bristol.gov.uk/schools-learning-early-years/free-school-meals, or search for Bristol City Council Free School Meals and follow the instructions carefully.

If you do not have access to an email address, please contact us on 01179664844 and we will be happy to help you.

Once you have completed the form you will receive an acknowledgement email, and the Local Authority will be in touch with us directly. It may speed up the process if you were to let us know if you have made a successful application, by emailing the confirmation to us [christ.the.king.p@bristol-schools.uk]. We will then arrange for Edenred UK
[https://www.edenred.co.uk/reward-recipients/Free-School-Meal-Vouchers/] to email the vouchers to you throughout the rest of term and the summer holidays.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parents/Carers,

Punctuality

We are currently doing our best to manage the school safely under challenging circumstances. To support this we have timetabled all children to come in at specific times so we can ensure that the entry to and exit from school is as safe as possible and can be managed by a smaller number of staff. We are finding it difficult to manage when we have a number of children who are coming to school or collected late. Can I ask all parents and carers to help us by making sure their children arrive at and leave school at the agreed times.

Internet Safety

As many of us are spending much more time both working and playing on the internet at the moment, Google has put together a short, helpful handbook full of tips and tricks for supporting your child’s digital education called ‘Be Internet Legends’.  It reinforces the important online safety lessons your child will have been learning in school, including: smart sharing, not oversharing; knowing what’s real and what’s fake; keeping your information safe; respecting others and speaking up.  You can find the e-handbook here.

Update on Children Returning (a reminder from previous newsletter)

The Government announced last week that schools will not be directed to admit more year groups of children this term, recognising the logistical problems that all schools face in teaching all children in smaller groups.

In the absence of any further guidance, we have carefully considered how to best meet the needs of all children in this school. We are worried that children in Years 2,3,4 and 5 have had no opportunity to be in school with their peers and teachers, since March. To address this we have planned the following for the remainder of Term 6:

  • Our Key Worker Group will continue in school until the end of term - Friday 17th July.

  • Children currently in our Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 Groups will finish 1 week early - Friday 10th July

  • Children in Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be invited into school for the week beginning Monday 13th July and finish on Friday 17th July (some year groups may start on Tuesday 14th July). All children will be taught in smaller ‘bubbles’ like children in school presently.

We are sure that parents in Years Rec, 1 and 6 understand that by finishing 1 week early, we are giving the rest of the school an opportunity to spend time in school before the end of the academic year.

We hope that this plan will give all children the opportunity to finish their school year together, feeling happier and looking forward to a summer holiday, the new school year or for Year 6, their new secondary school.

We will share details of these new arrangements in the coming weeks.

We will continue to keep you updated of our plans and any relevant Government announcements.

In the absence of any further guidance, we arehowever  carefully considering if we can invite more children into school safely this term, what a return to school might look like in September and what support might look like in the meantime; especially for those children who have not yet had the option to return to school and those who would benefit most from additional support.

Staffing Update - Mrs Triggs

I am sad to announce that Mrs Triggs will be retiring this summer after an amazing 36 years in teaching.  Mrs. Triggs started her teaching career in 1984, teaching in London before moving to Bristol to start a family with her husband Richard.

Mrs Triggs has been a key part of the team here at School of Christ the King since 1994 and has worked as Deputy Headteacher for the past twenty years.

I have worked with her closely for the past four and a half years and she has been the most brilliant Deputy Headteacher - she has very high expectations whilst being incredibly calm and nurturing. Her dedication to the children in our community is amazing and she will be missed by us all.

We look forward to working with Mrs Triggs for the rest of the summer term and wish her and her family the happiest of retirements.

Dear Parents/Carers of children in Reception and Year 1,

This is an update regarding those children where parents have confirmed attendance, starting this week or early next week.

This is a reminder of when children should be dropped off to school. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL CHILDREN ARRIVE ON TIME AS WE HAVE PLANNED CAREFULLY TO ENABLE SOCIAL DISTANCING. If you are late for collection or drop-off then you will need to wait until the following drop off or pick up time.

As we have planned our groups carefully, we can only accept those children where parents/carers have confirmed in advance that they are returning to school.

This newsletter also lets you all know which staff will be teaching each ‘bubble’.

Timetable for drop off and pick up

To make the start of the day as safe as possible, when children enter and leave the school. We will be using two entrances:

The main entrance
The black door next to the kitchen (near the school hall)

There will be markings on the railings outside so that children and parents can line up, at a social distance, at the start and end of the school day.

Yours sincerely
