Dear Parents/Carers,

Next Term’s Curriculum

Here are the key topics children will be learning about next term. Please encourage your child to learn about these at home:

New ‘Tech Team’ Club for Year 6

Ever think a mousetrap could power a car? Well, that’s exactly what our new ‘Tech Team’ will be building here in school.  The team will start by building the base, then add the mousetraps power and then see it race off into the distance!

The team will experiment with the gears and other unique build components to allow the best build racer to go farther, faster or pull heavy weights.   They will be applying the science of kinetic and potential energy, simple machines and friction as they design, construct and even reengineer the ultimate mousetrap vehicle!

This club will be for Year 6 and will start on Thursday 9th January from 3.15pm - 4.00pm.  If you child would like to join this club please let the school office know.

Anti-Bullying Week

This week, all children have been learning about how to identify bullying and what to do when it happens.

I thought this would be a good opportunity to remind you all that the school's behaviour policy defines bullying as –

Persistent and deliberate undermining of a person’s self-esteem and feelings of well-being in whatever form this takes.

Should an incident occur, which is perceived to be bullying, we encourage all children to tell their teacher. The incident will then be swiftly investigated, recorded and appropriate action will be taken. If a child comes home feeling the situation has not been resolved, parents need to inform the class teacher immediately. If after talking to the class teacher, the situation has not improved, please make an appointment to discuss the matter with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. They will investigate fully, record all relevant information and take appropriate action. If parents still feel the issue has not been resolved satisfactorily, finally the School Governors should then be contacted.

At School, we will not tolerate bullying of any kind.

As you will all know, there are times when children have problems with relationships and although possibly upsetting, this is usually not bullying.

Dealing with a Problem

If parents have any problems regarding their child, they are always advised to see the class teacher. For an adult to talk to another parent or somebody else’s child about a concern they have, can often make matters worse.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Odd Socks Day

We are celebrating odd sock day on Tuesday 12th November as part of Anti-Bullying Week.  Children should wear odd socks as an opportunity to encourage people to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique!

Children’s School Health and Safety Team

At School of Christ the King, we value all our children’s opinions, and this is why we are setting up a new Health and Safety Team to improve health and safety awareness and help make our school a safer and happier place. We believe that children enjoy being given responsibilities, and we also believe that children need to appreciate the importance of making their own decisions.

The team will meet on a regularly with health and safety expert Ray Connolly, who is also a school governor (Ray is a member of IOSH, the health and safety body in England).

The club will start as an after-school club on a Thursday from 3.15-4pm for Years 5 and 6.  This club will start after the school half term.  If you child is interested please speak to the school office.

Attendance

Well done to the following classes who had attendance at over 97% this week:

  • Year 2 - 98%
  • Year 4 - 99%

This means that Year 4 will have a non uniform day on the 8th November.

Leave of Absence During Term Time

We must remind all parents that the Headteacher CANNOT authorise any leave of absence during term time unless for exceptional circumstances.  Any requests must be made in writing on a form available from the school office and must be made at least ten days before the leave is due to commence.  Any leave taken that has not been considered exceptional will be recorded as unauthorised.  There will be two unauthorised absences recorded for each day - morning and afternoon.  If there are eight or more unauthorised absences recorded within a ten week period, the school can issue a penalty notice.  This will be £60 per child for each parent, meaning a possible penalty charge of £120 per child.

We appreciate that holidays taken during term time can be much cheaper than those taken during the school holidays but we have a legal responsibility to ensure that every child is attending school and receiving their education.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Attendance

Excellent attendance this week -

Well done to the following classes who had attendance at over 97% this week:

  • Year 1 - 97%
  • Year 2 - 98%
  • Year 3 - 100%
  • Year 4 - 98%

  • Year 6 - 98%

This means that Year 3 has non-uniform on Friday 4th October

Census Day - Thursday 3rd October

On Thursday 3rd October the Government will be running a Census day where we have to report on the number of children within the school.  As part of this Census the government like to know the number of children who ate a hot school meal as it contributes towards our funding budget.

THIS MEANS - THE MORE CHILDREN WHO HAVE SCHOOL DINNERS = MORE MORE MONEY FOR THE SCHOOL

We have therefore changed the hot menu choice for that day to the following, with the hope that you child will consume a hot lunch:-

  • Fish fingers, baked beans, peas and chips with jelly and ice cream for dessert.

We will also be holding a lucky plate competition where your child might win a prize if they have a school meal on this day.

Tobacco Factory drama at Filwood Community Centre

The Tobacco Factory has started running drama classes at the Filwood Community Centre in Knowle West – every Tuesday from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Parent Helpers for School Trips

We would like to create a small team of parents who are available to help out with school trips. We would offer some simple training and a full DBS clearance to ensure safety. Parent volunteers would not necessarily be on trips with their own child’s class but would have a great opportunity to support the school and our children. Please contact the school office if you are interested.

Mrs Selway is now hosting informal drop-in sessions each Friday morning. This time will enable parents/carers to meet up and perhaps seek support and advice. If you have a worry of any kind, or just would like to have a chat with other parents and carers  - pop in!

Lent Fundraising

The school donated £500 from the Lent money to the homelessnes charity Shelter.   We have received the following comment from Shelter and wanted to share this with you and to say thank you for your generosity.

“Just want to say a massive thank you to School of Christ the King, who has helped to raise £500 for Shelter. Amazing!”

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to the last newsletter of this school year. The children have had another great year of learning and friendship. Can I again thank you all for your support.

Celebrating Great 100% Attendance

As you are aware, School of Christ the King is giving a high priority to improving attendance and punctuality. A number of initiatives have been implemented in the school, to raise both pupil and parent awareness of this issue and the benefits of good attendance.

Well done to the following children who got 100% attendance and were presented with a special prize today:-

Recent figures show very positive news about improvements in attendance over time. Over the last 4 years attendance has improved each year from 94.3% to 95.7%. This may not seem like a big difference, but the improvement of 1.4% means:

  • Our overall attendance is now in line with national figures for primary schools.
  • Attendance is now above Bristol overall attendance.
  • Overall  children are in school an incredible 545 extra days extra across the year compared to 4 years ago.
  • This is the same as an average of 2 ½ days of school per child compared to 4 year ago.

School Shoes

Thank you for the children looking so smart in their school uniforms this year.

As you know, children at School of Christ the King are required to wear PLAIN BLACK SHOES. Although we prefer shoes, as an alternative we do accept PLAIN BLACK TRAINERS. However recently, a number of children have been coming to school wearing black trainers with brand markings (e.g stripes or ticks). These types of footwear are not permitted in school.

We do however appreciate that parents would rather buy new school shoes ready for school in September and we are happy to bend the rules until then; as long as children return wearing PLAIN BLACK SHOES in September!

Reading during the summer

Research shows that children who read for 10 minutes a day during the summer holidays make better progress in school than those who don't read. Here are some websites to give ideas and free resources to keep your children reading through the summer, and make the start back in September easier for them:

Dear Parents/Carers,

School Reports

Reports will be sent out to parents today. I have read all of the reports and each one  celebrates the achievement of each child. The teachers have done a tremendous job of describing each child’s success.

If you would like to discuss your child’s progress with their class teacher please telephone the school office to make an appointment after school on Wednesday 17th July.

A huge thank you goes to you all for showing such commitment and interest in our children’s  learning.

All the children will be walking with the staff to the Park to start at about 1pm. Once the races are finished parents/carers can collect their children and take them home from The Park. Children can only be collected by adults that usually collect them from school.

If parents/carers are unable to attend sport’s day these children will walk back to school with staff and be ready  at 3.15pm.
