Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back
Thank you all for a wonderful start to the new school year! We hope you all had a really good summer break and it was great to see all the children today looking smart in their school uniform and with most children arriving at school by 8.50am, ready for learning. Also attendance this week has been great with a really positive, with 96.5% attendance across the whole school.

We thank you all for your support.

New End of Day Procedures - updated
As you have all been fantastic in helping us manage the end of the day and everything is much more orderly, the school office has now re-opened.
During the last academic year we have had concerns about safety at the end of the school day. Because we have a large number of children leaving the school from the front entrance, mixing with a large number of adults, it has been increasingly difficult for teachers to ensure children are going home with the right adult.
As you know, safety is incredibly important to us all, and to address these concerns we are introducing these new end of day procedures:
  • The front gate will not open to parents until 3.15pm.
  • Children in Reception, Year 1, 2, 3 and 4 will line up behind their teachers in designated areas. This will allow teachers to ensure children leave school with the correct adult.
  • As they are more independent, children in Year 5 and 6 will be taken out to the front of the school with their teacher. They will then be allowed to go when they can see their parent/carer.
  • We need written permission for any child to walk home by themselves. Following national guidance, we strongly recommend that only children in Years 5 and 6 should walk home alone.
  • If an adult other than the usual parent/carer is collecting a child, the school needs to be informed by 2pm (unless there is an emergency).
Thank you all for your patience, understanding and cooperation in implementing these changes.
Term 6 100% Attendance
As you are aware, each term we have a 100% attendance presentation when each class will have a special draw where children can win a new storybook. We enter all children with 100% attendance and who have no more than 2 late arrivals to school. The next attendance assembly will be on Wednesday 13th September. Children who had 100% attendance in Term 6 will also be able to wear non-uniform on this day.
Transfer from KS1 to KS2 - hot school meals
There are a number of children in year 2 currently eligible for Free School Meals.  To ensure these children receive a free school meal in September 2017 when they enter Year 3, parents/carers need to apply for free school meals to Bristol City Council. Our preferred method of application is online which is quick, easy and secure to use:  https://efsm.bristol.gov.uk.
Parents/carers will be able to make online applications within 7 weeks of the child starting Year 3 in September.

If you do not have access to a computer then the school office will help you with your application.

Confidence-Boosting Cycling Sessions for Women

The Bristol Family Cycling Centre in Hengrove has teamed up with #ThisGirlCan to offer some confidence-building cycling sessions for women in September.

The fun, 90-minute session will run on September 12 and will be repeated on September 19 and September 23. Women can choose which date to attend.

Instructors from the Cycling Centre will help them with basic bike handling skills such as riding one handed (ready for signalling) and looking behind them. Riders just need to be able to ride a bike (set off and stop independently) – it doesn’t matter if they are slightly wobbly.

Women with children aged 6-14 can bring them along to take part too, as long as they can ride. The session costs just £1 per person and the Cycling Centre can provide bikes and helmets (or riders can bring their own).

The Bristol Family Cycling Centre at Hengrove was set up by Bristol City Council in 2016. It has a range of traffic-free paths and a 400m former athletics track to allow children and adults to perfect their skills and abilities, regardless of age, ability or access needs. The Centre is just off Bamfield. The entrance can be accessed from the bottom right-hand corner of the car park next to Action Indoor Sports. For more information contact cyclingcentre@bristol.gov.uk; call 01275 832800 or visit the Centre’s Facebook page.
