Dear Parents/Carers,

The Best Week of Attendance Ever!

Well done to the following classes who had attendance at over 97% this week:
Year 1 - 98%
Year 2 - 99%
Year 3 - 99%
Year 4 - 99%
Year 5 - 99%
Year 6 - 98%

This means Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 will have a special non-uniform day on Friday 7th December.

Friday Morning Coffee Time

Mrs Selway is now hosting informal drop-in sessions each Friday morning. This time will enable parents/carers to meet up and perhaps seek support and advice. Mrs Selway can offer advice and also provide links to other organisations who offer support. If you have a worry of any kind, or just would like to have a chat with other parents and carers  - pop in!

School Places for September

In July, Ofsted Inspector Michael Merchant praised our school saying, ‘The School of Christ The King is a welcoming, caring school… where there is a very positive atmosphere in classrooms and teachers have high expectations of pupils’.

The school is almost full but we do have some space available in Years 5 and 6. If you know somebody who might need a school place, please ask them to contact the school office.

Parents can now apply for places for Reception 2019 via www.bristol.gov.uk/schooladmissions.  All applications need to be made by the 15th January 2019.  A supplementary form also needs to be completed and returned to the school office.

IF YOU KNOW SOMEBODY WHO NEEDS A SCHOOL PLACE, PLEASE LET THEM KNOW ABOUT SCHOOL OF CHRIST THE KING! Thank you.

Dealing with Problems

If parents have any problems regarding their child, they are always advised to see the class teacher. Alternatively you can always speak to Mrs Selway or myself on the front gate, or speak to the team in the office who will find the right person to help.
Recently we have had problems being shared on Facebook that have not been shared with the school. If we are told what you are worried about, we will always do our best to address your concerns.

Punctuality

A reminder that children need to be in school by 8.50am.  On a morning if your child does not arrive by 8.55am the front gates will be closed and your child will need to be brought to the main school office on arrival. We will always request a reason for lateness when a child is more than 5 minutes late.

We also have a number of children who are regularly collected late from school. Whilst we understand that parents and carers may be occasionally late collecting their child, it is unacceptable when this is a regular occurance. When this is happening often we will contact parents explaining that, if late collection continues, we will have to restrict access to extended school activities such as clubs and Chill Time Club.

If you are late, due to unforeseen circumstances, please let the school office know.

Christmas Lunch

The children’s Christmas dinner day is the 19th December.  Children will be booked in for a Christmas lunch unless you let the school office know.  The school cook needs to have the number of Christmas dinners to prepare before the day. The cost will be £2.10 for Junior Children.

Summer Chill Time Klub

Summer Chill Time Klub will run again during the summer holiday next year.  The Klub will be open on w/c 29th July and 5th August.   If you would like to book your child into the Klub please telephone the school office.

Leave of Absence During Term Time

We must remind all parents that the Headteacher CANNOT authorise any leave of absence during term time unless for exceptional circumstances.  Any requests must be made in writing on a form available from the school office and must be made at least ten days before leave is due to commence.  Any leave taken that has not been considered exceptional will be recorded as unauthorised.  There will be two unauthorised absences recorded for each day - morning and afternoon.  If there are eight or more unauthorised absences recorded within a ten week period, the school can issue a penalty notice.  This will be £60 per child for each parent, meaning a possible penalty charge of £120 per child.

We appreciate that holidays taken during term time can be much cheaper than those taken during the school holidays but we have a legal responsibility to ensure that every child is attending school and receiving their education.

Year 6 SATs Week

Year 6 SATs tests will take place from Monday 13th May - Friday 17th May 2019.  These are statutory tests and parents/carers should avoid any family holidays during the month of May.

Volunteer at Lifeskills

Did your child come to Lifeskills? Have you got a bit of spare time on your hands? Would you like to work with children to improve their safety skills?

Lifeskills is a safety education charity helping thousands of children from across the West of England to live safer, happier lives. Our Centre is a realistic village with houses, shops, a railway and a beach where children learn how to deal with dangerous or difficult situations in a safe, interactive environment. We need volunteers to guide small groups of children through the Lifeskills village. Sessions run from 9.40am – 12pm and 12.40pm – 3pm weekdays during term time. Volunteering is flexible and we only ask for a minimum commitment of 2 days a month. If you would like to get involved call 0117 922 4511 or email johanna@lifeskills-bristol.org.uk

We are the busiest we have ever been and are fully booked for the current academic year. This means we need to recruit more volunteers for our Year 6 programme to ensure your pupils get the best possible experience.

Parent Governor Vacancy

As I am sure you are aware, all schools have a Governing Body who support the Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team in their endeavours to make this school an outstanding establishment where all children thrive.

We now have a vacancy on our Governing Body for a Parent Governor.  All parents are eligible to apply for this voluntary role and we would ask you to contact the school office if you would like your name to be put forward.

Meetings are termly and  run from 3:30 to 5:30pm.   An interest in the school and finding out more about the way that the school is managed is the first consideration and if you have any specific skills with budgets or experience with staffing issues you would be particularly welcome.

If you would like further information please speak to Miss Roberts in the office who will either be able to help you or will put you in touch with the Clerk to the Governors to answer any specific questions. Alternatively just come and have a chat with me about the role at the school gates.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Moving to another school

If you are looking to move your child to another because of change of address or location etc.  Please can you speak with the school office who will let you have a form to complete for details of the new school.  It is important that the school knows that the child is moving school and where they are going, otherwise we will have to report them as a missing child to the local authority.
