Christmas Celebrations

Even though we had to make some adjustments due to COVID, we have just had a wonderful period of Advent and Christmas celebrations.  Can I say a big thank you to everybody in the school community for making these events so special and full of joy.

INSET

Our first day back after the Christmas break, Tuesday 4th January,  will be an inset day for staff professional development and as such school will be closed to all pupils. 

We look forward to welcoming the children back on Wednesday 5th January 2022.

Winter Wellness 

This time of year can be challenging for the mental health of us all, including our children and young people, especially with the added pressures of Covid this year. 

The Safeguarding in Education team have sent us some fantastic resources to share with families this year, to help make the winter break a little less stressful - from ‘14 Ways To Be Kind’ to ‘Christmas Recipes for Kids’, there’s plenty of excellent guides and advice available.

Uniform Reminder 

When we return to school in January, we would like to politely remind parents and carers that children should be coming to school in the appropriate uniform. 

Children should wear the following uniform: 

• PLAIN BLACK SHOES
• grey / black trousers or skirts – no leggings or tracksuit bottoms
• red sweatshirt or cardigan or fleece
• white / red polo shirts
• PE Kit (which is plain white t-shirt / plain black shorts and PE daps or trainers)

Booking and Paying for School Clubs 

As you know we currently run a Breakfast Club and various afterschool activities for pupils. 

We would like to remind you that, where possible, these clubs should be booked and paid for using the School Gateway app. 

This term, we have had a number of parents booking clubs through the school office, and while this is okay from time to time, it means that payments for these sessions are often not being made in a timely manner. Whilst we want to ensure that all of our pupils have the opportunity to attend our clubs, we cannot guarantee spaces in sessions if payment has not been made. 

If you are still having difficulties accessing the School Gateway App, or have any other concerns about booking onto, or paying for school clubs, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to support you with this. 

New After School Clubs

If you would like your child to attend Chill, after their club, the total charge is £3.50. Your child can then attend Chill until 4:30pm.

Christmas Performances 

Key Stage 1 

The children have recorded some wonderful Nativity performances. These will be shared with you all online next week.

Key Stage 2 

Due to the new Covid-19 variant, and ongoing concerns, this year we are planning to hold out Key Stage 2 carol service outdoors during the last week of term. Weather permitting, we would like to invite parents to the playground on Tuesday 14th December at 2.15pm to listen to the beautiful carols our children have been working hard to learn. Should the weather be unfavourable, we will move this date to Thursday 16th December. 

We encourage everybody to wrap up with wooly hats and scarfs for a very special Christmas celebration. 

Details will be confirmed via text on Monday 13th December and we will keep our fingers crossed that everything can go ahead as planned. 

Other Christmas Events 

Christmas Dinner Day 

This year, we will be serving Christmas Dinner for pupils on Wednesday 15th December. Hopefully you have already let the school office know if you would like your child to have a Christmas Dinner on this day.   

Christmas Jumper Day 

We would like to invite children to wear their Christmas jumpers into school for the final day of term on Friday 17th December 2021. 

New After School Clubs

A reminder of our new after school clubs:

• Wednesday Years 3-5 - Basketball

• Thursday Years 1 and 2 - Multi Sports (focussing on balls skills, including Netball & Basketball) 
• Friday Year 6 - Archery

These clubs are being offered as part of paid after school provision, which is £2 for clubs until 4pm. Please book as soon as possible, to guarantee your child’s place. Art Club 

As you may know we are now running a  fortnightly Art Club on Wednesdays for Year 5 pupils. We would like to be able to offer children the chance to create an ongoing art project, and as such we would like to ask that when booking into Art Club, bookings be made for a few weeks at a time to enable them to complete the work they have started. Bookings should be made through the School Gateway App, however if you have any difficulties with this, please contact the school office. 

Should there not be enough uptake of Year 5 pupils for Art Club, we may consider opening the sessions up to Year 6 pupils in the new year, please let the office know if your child is in Year 6 and would like the chance to participate.

Attendance 

Unfortunately none of our classes managed to achieve over 97% attendance this week. Due to the change in weather we have noticed a lot of children off of school with general cold symptoms - please be reminded that children can still come to school with a cold, and we are able to provide Calpol for minor illness if necessary. 

Thank you for your continued support in helping us to improve attendance. We hope next term we can celebrate more and more classes achieving that 97% and above! 

Headteachers Awards

The following children will receive an award in next week’s Celebration Assembly. Videos of Celebration Assemblies are now shared on our Facebook page. 

Year 1 -  

• Isla - For independently writing a fantastic innovation based on the story of The Three Little pigs.

Year 2 -  

• Olivia - For always being a very  kind and helpful  friend to other children in our class.     

Year 3 - 

• Rubie- For settling into Year 3 and making lots of new friends this week. We are lucky to have her! 
• Toby- For writing fantastic ideas in his storyboard and completing his work to an incredibly high standard. 

Year 4- 

• Freya- For immersing herself in our class text and describing a character using language which suited the purpose perfectly. 

Year 5 -  

• Des’Arai- For cutting down her speed tables time from 10 minutes to 5 minutes 26 seconds. Fantastic perseverance! 
• Fidel - For his superb solo singing in class when we were practising, teaching us all by example.  

Year 6

• Year 6 - for representing our school to the highest standard. They embraced the London trip with enthusiasm, asking appropriate questions and supporting each other - well done!

Dear Parents, 

We are writing to update you all that we have a small amount of confirmed cases of COVID-19 within the school. Currently we have 2 confirmed cases of COVID in one class.

We know that you may find this concerning but we are continuing to monitor the situation and are providing the following advice. Please be reassured that for most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness.

The school/nursery/college/ setting remains open and your child should continue to attend as normal if they remain well. We encourage household members that are aged 11 and over to continue with twice weekly LFD testing to help identify cases promptly.

 

If you think your child is a close contact but has not have not been contacted directly by NHS Test and Trace then they should take a PCR test via Get a free PCR test to check if you have coronavirus (COVID-19) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) or by calling 119.  When ordering a PCR test it is important to check the box (online) or tell 119 ‘I’ve been told to get a test by my health protection team’ and not ‘I’ve been told to get a test by my school or nursery’. Further guidance can be found at Guidance for contacts of people with confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) infection who do not live with the person - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

What to do if your child develops symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) or tests positive for COVID-19

If your child develops symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19), they should get a PCR test and remain at home at least until the result is known. If negative, the child can end self-isolation; if positive, the child should isolate until at least 10 days after their symptoms appeared. Symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are a new, continuous cough, or a high temperature, or a loss of, or change in, their normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia).   If the child has a positive test result but do not have symptoms, they should stay at home and self-isolate for 10 days from the date the positive test was taken. This isolation period will be extended if they go on to develop symptoms by counting 10 full days from the day following their symptom onset. Anyone with symptoms will be eligible for a PCR test (the normally available test type) and this can be arranged via Get a free PCR test to check if you have coronavirus (COVID-19) - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) or by calling 119.  

Instructions for people who live in the same household as someone with COVID-19 (tested positive or symptomatic awaiting a test result)

From 16 August, you will not be required to self-isolate if you are a contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 and any of the following apply:

• you are fully vaccinated

• you are below the age of 18 years 6 months

• you have taken part in or are currently part of an approved COVID-19 vaccine trial

• you are not able to get vaccinated for medical reasons

Fully vaccinated means that you have been vaccinated with an MHRA approved COVID-19 vaccine in the UK, and at least 14 days have passed since you received the recommended doses of that vaccine.

NHS Test and Trace will contact you to let you know that you have been identified as a contact and check whether you are legally required to self-isolate. If you are not legally required to self-isolate, you will be provided with advice on testing and given guidance on preventing the spread of COVID-19. Even if you do not have symptoms, you will be advised to have a PCR test as soon as possible.

Any member of the household who is aged 18 years and 6 months or over and has only received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine or has not received any dose of the COVID-19 vaccination will still be required to self-isolate as household contact of a someone with COVID-19 symptoms awaiting testing and someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Please read the stay at home guidance which provides information on this. 

Household members who are not exempt from isolation as close contacts should not go to work, school/college/childcare/education setting or public areas, and exercise should be taken within the home. If you require help with buying groceries, other shopping or picking up medication, or walking a dog, you should ask friends or family. Alternatively, you can order your shopping online and medication by phone or online. Household members staying at home for 10 days will greatly reduce the overall amount of infection the household could pass on to others in the community.

You could be fined if you do not self-isolate following a notification by NHS Test and Trace. You may be entitled to a one-off payment of £500 through the NHS Test and Trace Support Payment scheme if you are required to stay at home and self-isolate or you are the parent or guardian of a child who has been told to self-isolate. 

Those who are clinically extremely vulnerable should be supported to minimise their contact with other people in the household during this period, regardless of whether others have symptoms or not.

Instructions for household contacts who are not required to self-isolate from 16 August

Even if you are vaccinated, you can still be infected with COVID-19 and pass it on to others. If you are identified as a contact of someone with COVID-19 but you are not required to self-isolate, you can help protect others by following the guidance on how to stay safe and help prevent the spread. As well as getting a PCR test, you may also consider:

• limiting close contact with other people outside your household, especially in enclosed spaces

• wearing a face covering for those aged 11 and over in crowded places such as school/college/public transport

• limiting contact with anyone who is clinically extremely vulnerable

• taking part in regular LFD testing

You should follow this advice while the person in your household with COVID-19 is self-isolating.

If you are a health or social care worker or a student undertaking a work placement   who has been identified as a household contact and are exempt from self-isolation, there is additional guidance available that you should follow to reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19 in these settings.

If you develop symptoms at any time, even if these are mild, self-isolate immediately, arrange to have a COVID-19 PCR test and follow the guidance for people with COVID-19 symptoms.

For most people, coronavirus (COVID-19) will be a mild illness.

If your child does develop symptoms, you can seek advice from the nhs.uk website at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/check-if-you-have-coronavirus-symptoms/. If you are concerned about your child’s symptoms, or they are worsening you can seek advice from NHS 111 at https://111.nhs.uk/ or by phoning 111.

How to stop coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading 

There are things you can do to help reduce the risk of you and anyone you live with getting ill with coronavirus (COVID-19):

• get vaccinated – everyone aged 18 and over can book COVID-19 vaccination appointments now and 16-17 year olds are being offered 1 dose of the vaccination by 23 August

• wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser regularly throughout the day 

• cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

• put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards

• meet people outside and avoid crowded areas

• open doors and windows to let in fresh air if meeting people inside

• wear a face covering if aged 11 and over when it's hard to stay away from other people – particularly indoors or in crowded places

E-Scooters

The use of privately owned e-scooters is still illegal on public roads and pavements. Unless rented or leased through Bristol City Council’s e-scooter scheme, parents and children should not be riding them on public land. As well as being illegal, riding e-scooters on the school run, when there are numerous pedestrians and cars around, is extremely dangerous. 

We have now been informed by our local PCSO that any unlicensed e-scooters seen in the local area will be confiscated from riders - so please bear in mind that should you decide to use this form of transport in future, you do so at your own risk.

We want to support families to ensure children are in school as often as possible, and we have procedures in place to ensure children can still attend, even with minor illnesses. 

Unreported absences are a safeguarding concern, and if we do not hear from you regarding your child’s absence, we will attempt to contact your given emergency contacts and a home visit will be carried out to establish the whereabouts of your child. 

Thank you for your ongoing support to improve attendance.

Parent Governor Vacancy

As I am sure you are aware, all schools have a Governing Body who support the Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team in their endeavours to make this school an outstanding establishment where all children thrive.

We now have a vacancy on our Governing Body for a Parent Governor.  All parents are eligible to apply for this voluntary role and we would ask you to contact the school office if you would like your name to be put forward.

Meetings typically start at 3:30 or 4pm and finish between 5 or 5:30pm.   An interest in the school and finding out more about the way that the school is managed is the first consideration and if you have any specific skills with budgets or experience with staffing issues you would be particularly welcome.

If you have a child that was born between 1st September 2017 and 31st August 2018, or you know someone that does, admissions are now open for Reception Class applications. 

We are very proud of our Reception Class, and our Early Years Team works very hard to create a welcoming and exciting environment for our new pupils. 

Applications close on 15th January 2022 and we will be holding open events on the following dates: 

• Thursday 9th December  - 2.30pm and 4.30pm 
• Monday 10th January  - 9.30am and 4.30pm 

If you would like to attend one of these open sessions, please contact the school office to book a space.  Each session will take about 30 minutes. If you would like to arrange a visit, but are unable to make one of the above sessions, please contact the office to arrange an alternative time. 

Parking 

Please can we politely remind parents that they should be observing the road markings outside the school during drop-off and pick-up times. Parents should NOT be parking on the zig-zag lines, or parking in the bus/loading bay as this not only causes congestion on the road, but is also a danger to pedestrians. 

We have had a number of complaints from parents recently who have not been able to safely cross the road with their children, or who have been caught in unnecessary traffic caused by inconsiderate parking  - if this continues, we may have to get our local PCSO involved. 

Thank you for your cooperation with this issue. .

Attendance Champions 

Congratulations to Year 4 who have achieved 97% attendance this week! We would like to thank you for your continued effort to make sure children are in school, on time, every day. 

With our new attendance procedures in place, we hope to see attendance improving and we would love to see more classes become Attendance Champions in the coming weeks.

New After School Clubs

The following after school clubs are starting this week:

• Wednesday Years 3-5 - Basketball
• Wednesday Year 5 - Art (every fortnight) 
• Thursday Years 1 and 2 - Multi Sports (focussing on balls skills, including Netball & Basketball) 
• Friday Year 6 - Archery

These clubs are being offered as part of paid after school provision, which is £2 for clubs until 4pm. Please book as soon as possible, to guarantee your child’s place. If you would like your child to attend Chill, after their club, the total charge is £3.50. Your child can then attend Chill until 4:30pm.

Community Activities 

This weekend, there are a series of free events happening in Knowle West organised by Knowle West Media Centre. 

This Friday 19th Nov people can join a free cook-a-long on zoom 6-8pm they will get to learn to make Japanese dumplings with a cook from Japan! Anyone living in BS4 gets a free ingredients pack, (made by Square Food Foundation) which they can collect from KWMC this Fri afternoon - we have some spare...would love to make sure they go to local people.

Parent Governor Vacancy

As I am sure you are aware, all schools have a Governing Body who support the Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team in their endeavours to make this school an outstanding establishment where all children thrive.

We now have a vacancy on our Governing Body for a Parent Governor.  All parents are eligible to apply for this voluntary role and we would ask you to contact the school office if you would like your name to be put forward.

Meetings typically start at 3:30 or 4pm and finish between 5 or 5.30pm.   An interest in the school and finding out more about the way that the school is managed is the first consideration and if you have any specific skills with budgets or experience with staffing issues you would be particularly welcome.

Staff News

We are sad to share the news that Miss Kingscote, one of our Year 5 teachers, will be leaving us at Christmas as she is relocating to Wiltshire. We are however very happy that Miss Owers, who is already a well established part of the team as an Academic Mentor, will take on the role of class teacher in January. Miss Kingscote and Miss Owers are already working together to plan a smooth and positive transition for the children and a settled return to school in January.

• Kamsi - For making a great start since joining our school. She is enthusiastic and kind to her new friends. She has shown a wealth of knowledge and made great contributions in many subjects particularly in RE.
• All of year 1 - for being really sensible when we visited the church this week! The children learnt lots and enjoyed listening to Fr Micheal explain about the features of a church.

Year 2 -   

• Justin - For a fabulous start at our school.  He has shown his determination and  competitive side in PE and has demonstrated his enthusiasm for learning in class by asking and answering questions in class discussions.  He has shown he is now  part of the Year 2 team!
• Phoebe - For always making an amazing effort with her reading. Great expression and understanding.
• Tyrone - For becoming much more confident when reading out loud.   

Year 3 - 

• Rory- For being an independent learner and persevering with his number bonds.

Year 4-

• Josiah- For his deep thinking during our RE lessons this week. Year 4 were focussing on pilgrimage and Josiah contributed with great detail to our class discussions. 

Year 5 -  

• Mia - For being absorbed in her work and producing a superb continuous line drawing.

• Marley - for listening and reflecting on feedback to improve the quality of his work. Well done, Marley!

Odd Socks Day for Anti-Bullying Week

MONDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2021 will be Odd Socks Day to support Anti-Bullying week. All children are welcome to wear their craziest/brightest/oddest socks into school to stand up to bullying and celebrate what makes us unique!

Due to the change in weather we have noticed a lot of children off of school with general cold symptoms - please be reminded that children can still come to school with a cold, and we are able to provide calpol for minor illness if necessary. 

Thank you for your continued support in helping us to improve attendance. We hope we can celebrate more and more classes achieving that 97% and above soon! 

Children in Need

This year's Children in Need will be taking place on Friday 19th November. All children are invited to come into school wearing something spotty in exchange for a £1 donation. Children in Need is a fantastic cause and supports almost 4,000 charities across the UK to directly support children and young people who have been affected by a range of disadvantages.

• Vicka and Clay - for working well as a team to sort the human and physical features of our local environment in Geography.
• Gloria - For having such a great attitude towards her learning recently, making huge progress in many areas particularly with her blending skills in reading and taking pride in her achievements   - well done Gloria! 

Year 2 -   

• Kamil, Chloe and Zuzannah - for their fantastic artwork creations exploring finger painting to show poppies growing in a field.

Year 3 - 

• Year 3- For sharing ideas and working collaboratively to interview each other about our cinema trip to see Boss Baby 2 this week. The quotes that they have collected will be used by Year’s 5 and 6 for their written reviews. Great teamwork Year 3! 

Year 4-

• Grace- for her reflective piece of writing in RE. Grace reflected deeply on the meaning behind the story of Abraham and explained her thoughts in detail. 

Year 5 -  

• Ralphie- For being a team player and collaborating well with others during our PSHE lesson.

• Bryan- for his independent selection of thoughtful vocabulary in his Remembrance  prayer

Breakfast Club 

From Monday, we will be trialling having the breakfast club entrance at the kitchen gate. The gate will be open from 8am until 8:15am and a breakfast club staff member will be at the entrance to welcome the children. After 8:15am, any late arrivals will need to go to the main office. Many thanks.

Bonfire/Firework Safety

Today is bonfire night, and we know that lots of families will be out and about this evening enjoying fireworks and bonfire celebrations.

Poppy Appeal

As you know The Chaplaincy Team have been selling poppies, badges, snap bands, wristbands and other items this week to support this years’ poppy appeal. If your child would like to support this fantastic cause, sales will continue throughout next week.

• For Year 2 children - We worked in small teams to find a suitable material to make a boat for our Gingerbread Man so he could sail on water.  Everyone worked hard and had lots of fun investigating what material was going to be  the best.
• Alfie - for being so supportive, caring and helpful to support his mum recently. 

 

Year 3 - 

• Leo- For tackling problem solving  with confidence and using his skills to support others. 
• Ronnie and Lindsay- For being brave and reading beautifully in our first Mass with Father Michael.

• Frankie- for being so kind, caring and generous towards her classmates.

• Tommy - for showing enthusiasm in maths
• Freya - for her evocative use of personification, bringing the cinema experience to life
