Dear Parents and Carers,

This is an update of information we have recently received from Bristol City Council.

As you will be aware, yesterday’s update from Central Government focused on a number of key
messages in relation to self-isolation and social-distancing.

The DfE advice was also updated last night:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-educational-settings-about-covid-19

Schools and settings are to remain open for now

Here are updates regarding symptoms and advice for those with long term health conditions:

Developing symptoms

Staff, young people and children should stay at home if they are unwell with a new, continuous cough or a high temperature. They should, along with the rest of their family, self-isolate for 14 days (or 7 days if the member of staff lives alone).

Children, young people and adults (CYPA) with long-term health conditions

Those with long-term health conditions, such as diabetes, serious heart conditions, underlying neurological problems and kidney or liver disease, are at higher risk. These are the CYPA who are offered an annual flu vaccine injection. This does not include anyone that chooses to have the annual vaccine or the ones that are administered orally through the schools programme. CYPA who this applies to, are being advised to self-isolate for 16 weeks.

The list of at risk categories (for both children and adults is):
  • chronic (long-term) respiratory disease, such as severe asthma, chronic obstructive
  • pulmonary disease (COPD) or bronchitis
  • chronic heart disease, such as heart failure a
  • chronic kidney disease at stage three, four or five
  • chronic liver disease
  • cerebral palsy
  • chronic neurological disease, such as Parkinson’s disease or motor neurone
  • disease, or learning disability
  • Diabetes
  • splenic dysfunction or asplenia
  • a weakened immune system due to disease (such as HIV/AIDS) or treatment (such as cancer treatment)
  • morbidly obese (defined as BMI of 40 and above)

Families where a member has long term health conditions

A likely scenario will be that, where one member of the family is in the high risk category, the rest of the family will choose to self-isolate or increase social-distancing, to reduce the likelihood of bringing the virus into the house and putting them at greater risk.

I very much appreciate all of your support and understanding during this difficult time.

Please take care of yourselves.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parents/Carers,

Update on COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

Yesterday, the Government announced that we are moving from the Contain Phase of the coronavirus action plan and into the Delay Phase, in response to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Full details of each stage in the government action plan can be found here:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-action-plan

To support the delay of the spread of the virus, the Department for Health and Social Care has asked anyone who shows certain symptoms to stay at home for 7 days, regardless of whether they have travelled to affected areas. This means people should stay at home and avoid all but essential contact with others for 7 days from the point of displaying mild symptoms, to slow the spread of infection.

The symptoms are:

  • a high temperature (37.8 degrees and above)
  • a new, continuous cough

You do not need to call NHS 111, to stay at home. If your symptoms worsen during your stay at home period or are no better after 7 days, contact NHS 111 online at 111.nhs.uk. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. For a medical emergency, dial 999.

Current government advice remains in place: no education or childrens’ social care setting should close in response to a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case, unless advised to do so by Public Health England.

The Chief Medical Officer has advised that the impact of closing schools, on both children’s education and on the workforce, will be substantial but the benefit to public health may not be. Decisions on future advice to schools will be taken, based on the latest and best scientific evidence, which at this stage, suggests children are a lower risk group.

Home Learning and Support

In preparation for a possible future school closure, we are focusing on ensuring children have access to learning at home.

To do this, we are:

  • Planning to use the ‘Tapestry’ App in Reception, to support home learning.
  • Establishing ‘Home Learning Blogs’ for Years 1, 2 and 3 so that the teachers can set the children daily tasks, questions and challenges.
  • Using ‘Google Classroom’ for children in Years 4, 5 and 6 so that children can be given daily tasks by their teachers. The children can respond and teachers are able to give support and feedback.
  • We will be sending work home with children that their teachers will guide them through.
  • Giving children the opportunity to learn and practise using a range of digital apps (e.g Rock Star Maths)
  • The children will be sent home reading books so that they can read every day.

If your child does not have access to a tablet or computer at home, please contact the school office to see if we can help.

In the event of a closure, the school would remain contactable to give support and advice.

Easter Lent Collection

At this time every year, we encourage the children to think of others and raise money for charity.  This year we are going to raise money for 2 different charities, CAFOD and Above and Beyond (local charity raising funds for Bristol city centre hospitals).

So far we have collected:

  • Cake sake = £105
  • Penny Trail = £174
  • Pyjama Day = £135

We have the following events planned to raise money for our Lent collection:

  • Friday 20th March - Crazy Hair Day (bring £1)
  • Friday 27th March - Sponsored Obstacle Course (sponsorship forms to be sent home next week)
  • Friday 3rd April - Grand Easter Egg Raffle - tickets on sale at 20p each from Monday 2nd March.

Parking on the Pavement

Recently, we have had children put at risk from a car, as it drove up on the pavement. Can we ask everybody to park on the road, not the pavement, even if it means parking a bit further down the road. Together we can make sure our children are safe.

EASTER Chill Time ‘Klub’

The last Chill Time ‘Klub’ for the Easter term will be on Friday 3rd April.

To celebrate the last Chill Time ‘Klub’ it will be Easter themed.  Please book and pay in advance if you would like your child to join the Easter chill time ‘klub’, we need to know the number of children who will be attending for staffing - there will be limited spaces.

Dear parent/carer,

You’re likely aware of the outbreak of novel coronavirus and the subsequent confirmed cases in the UK. At School of Christ the King, we take the health and safety of our pupils and staff very seriously, so we’re sharing guidance from Public Health England on steps you should be taking.

There’s currently no cause for concern at the school, but we’ll keep you informed about any developments and ensure we’re keeping the school clean to prevent the spread of any virus.

Prevent the spread of infection

Make sure you and your children follow these general principles to prevent spreading any respiratory virus:

  • Wash your hands often – with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or an alcohol-based sanitiser if soap and water aren’t available
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
  • If you feel unwell, stay at home and don’t attend work or school
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a bin
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in the home
  • If you’re worried about your symptoms, please call NHS 111 – don’t go directly to your GP or other healthcare environment

If you or your children have returned from a category 1 country or area in past 14 days

This includes:

  • Wuhan city and Hubei province, China
  • Iran*
  • Daegu or Cheongdo, South Korea*
  • Any Italian town under containment measures* (see the map here) *Only if you’ve returned on or after 19 February 2020

Contact NHS 111 for advice, and:

  • Self-isolate for 14 days after leaving the country or area (see the home isolation advice sheet for help with this)
  • If you become unwell, call NHS 111 immediately for an assessment (or 999 if you require emergency medical attention) – see below for the symptoms to look out for

If you or your children have returned from a category 2 country or area in last 14 days

This includes:

  • Cambodia*
  • China (other than Wuhan city or Hubei province)
  • Hong Kong
  • Italy* (other than the towns under containment measures)
  • Japan
  • Laos*
  • Macau
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar*
  • Singapore
  • South Korea (other than Daegu or Cheongdo)
  • Taiwan
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam*
  • *Only if you’ve returned on or after 19 February 2020

If you or your children are well:

  • You don’t need to avoid contact with other people
  • Your other family members don’t need to take any precautions or make any changes to their own activities

If you become unwell (see below for a list of symptoms):

  • Stay indoors and avoid contact with other people as you would with other flu viruses (see the home isolation advice sheet for help with this)
  • Call NHS 111 immediately for an assessment (or 999 if you require emergency medical attention)

Symptoms to look out for

If you’ve returned from any of the category 1 or 2 areas or countries, look out for the following symptoms:

  • Cough
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Fever (a temperature of 38 degrees C or higher)

According to other official guidance, while you wait for further advice:

  • Avoid contact with others
  • Stay at home – don’t go to work or school
  • Don’t travel while sick
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing, throwing tissues in the bin
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (or an alcohol-based sanitiser if soap and water aren’t available)

If you or your child have any further concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school office on 01179 664844

Yours sincerely

Proposed Developments on the Broadway
Knowle West Alliance and Knowle West Futures working with local Councillors have secured a pause on the proposed housing developments for the old Cinema Site.  They think it’s important to look at Filwood Broadway as a whole, not just one site, and consider what do we, as a community, want and need; and how can we work together to make that happen?
Please come and have a chat with other locals about what you want at Filwood Community Centre on:
  • Thursday 12th March 3-5pm
  • Friday 13th 5-7pm
